L.H. Harvey

It’s definitely time for the cold weather camo hunting clothes. From jackets, under clothes, thermals, and coveralls, to boots, gloves, hats, and face masks, you can find all the cold weather protective wear you need to make hunting as comfortable as possible when the temperature falls.

Cold mornings can slow you down if you don’t wear the right clothes. Although you want to stay warm, you don’t want to be wearing bulky clothes that get in the way of hunting.

Camouflage hunting clothes for cold weather include all the regular camo brands and come in all the regular camo patterns. You can get snow patterns too for areas of the country that have a lot of snow during the hunting seasons. The thing to watch for when you’re looking for camo good to wear in cold weather is the ability of the clothing to insulate you against both cold and wet weather. Once you get wet on a cold day, you’re done for.

Make sure you wear good base layers. Arctic Shield and Under Armour are popular examples of camo made for cold weather. In cold weather, your boots should be waterproof and insulated, and your socks should be breathable but very good at keeping the cold out.

If you’re looking for a set of cold weather camo hunting clothes basics, here are some suggestions for the getup you’ll want to be wearing on the next crisp, clear, ice-cold morning you go a’ hunting. Don’t leave home without ‘em.

How to Wash Camo Hunting Clothes

L.H. Harvey

Hunters should take special care to wash their camo hunting clothes for several reasons.

Why You Should Wash Camo Hunting Clothes

  1. Human scent contaminates any camouflage clothes that you wear even for a short time
  2. Human body oils and sweat absorb into the fabric and make it impossible to just "air out" your scent
  3. Poison ivy/oak/sumac oils can stay on anything it touches for weeks and will cause an allergic reaction in most people when it touches human skin
  4. Seed ticks often find their way onto hunting clothes when you’re in the woods during the early fall and spring

Washing your camo clothes regularly eliminates these issues.

How to Wash Hunting Clothes

Washing camo hunting clothes is as easy as doing any other kind of laundry. You just need to know how to wash your hunting clothes so they don’t get brightened by regular laundry detergent or have scents added to them, because this is a big no-no. Deer have a great sense of smell and sight and can often pick out from their surroundings the clothes that have been washed in detergent with UV brighteners. So no Tide or Gain, or any of these kinds of detergent or you’re begging that deer to run away!

Know how to wash your hunting clothes the right way.

To do the most thorough job of washing your camo, you need some special laundry supplies just for hunters and their camouflage hunting clothes.

Even regular scent-free detergents will usually contain the UV brighteners so scent-free laundry detergent isn’t a good option. You want scent-eliminating detergents without UV enhancers, which isn’t the same thing at all as regular laundry detergents.

What Supplies You Need to Wash Hunting Clothes

Best Way to Wash Camo Clothes

  • Use cold water so you don’t fade your camouflage patterns
  • Use the correct amount of scent-eliminating detergent so it will be able to remove the most odor
  • Don’t dry in a dryer that has recently had fragranced dryer sheets used in it
  • Don’t hang dry near a source of strong human scent, such as the kitchen or bathroom

I hope this article on how to wash your camo clothes has given you the information you need to know how to wash your hunting gear before your next hunt.

What Camo Hunting Gloves Should You Wear in Cold Weather?

L.H. Harvey

I don’t think I have to explain why you need a good pair of camo hunting gloves. You need to keep your fingers warm because if you don’t, you might not be able to make the best shot when the time comes and take down the game you’re hunting.

Having to explain that the reason you couldn’t make the shot was because your fingers were numb is as embarrassing as having to admit you didn’t have your scent under control and the deer scented you out before you could get off your shot.

What Hunting Gloves to Wear in Cold Weather

Camo Liner Gloves

Start with a liner glove when there is cold weather. Wear it under your regular hunting gloves and you’ll keep your fingers and hands much warmer. Liner gloves are usually thin, so you can maintain your dexterity. This is good because if you need to do something that requires fine motor skills and you have to take off your outer gloves, your skin is still protected from the cold and you don’t lose all the heat it takes so long to build up sometimes when it’s really, really cold outside.

Outer Hunting Gloves

Next, get a good pair of cold weather hunting gloves to wear over your liner gloves. The thing about liner gloves is that they’re usually thin and tight, so that they interfere with your grip and movements as little as possible. Other hunting gloves, on the other hand, are meant to keep you warm, especially while you’re sitting, maybe in a blind or a tree stand, and maintaining a silent stalker position so you don’t spook off the game you’re hunting, like that trophy deer you don’t want to miss this year!

With that in mind, the hunting gloves are going to be thick and bulky and often impede your ability to do anything that requires precise finger movements, like mess with clips, buckles, or safety harnesses.

Wearing liner gloves under those bulky hunting gloves is a great way to keep warm and still have the ability to do anything you need to do without having to take off all your glove layers entirely. Liner gloves come in camouflage colors so you really are at an advantage. You can also were your camo liner gloves when you hunt during warm weather without an outer glove. This makes camo liner glove a great accessory to have in your hunting gear arsenal.

What Kind of Liner Glove to Wear

Under Armour makes really great gloves for hunters and sportsmen, with a focus on keeping things light and thin while providing warmth and protection for hunters and sportsmen.

What Kind of Cold Weather Hunting Glove to Wear

Your hunting glove can be of several varieties. It really just depends on what kind of glove you like best. Some people prefer the mitt type gloves because you can fold back the portion that covers the fingers and use your fingers for a variety of precision tasks. Other hunters prefer a standard five-fingered glove. Decide if you need waterproof or wind-resistant gloves for where you’ll be hunting, and choose accordingly. Finally, the one option you do need in the cold weather is insulated hunting gloves. The insulation provides all the warmth and protection you need to keep your fingers nice and toasty.

Here are some excellent suggestions for you to consider for your next pair of camo hunting gloves. Or do what I do and buy several pairs so you have something for any weather condition you could meet up with.

Almost all hunting gloves come in at least one camouflage pattern, the most popular camo choices being Mossy Oak Break-Up and RealTree AP. Some hunters’ camouflage gloves are available in even more camo patterns, including blaze orange.

Under Armour ColdGear Evolution Camo Thermals

L.H. Harvey

Under Armour ColdGear Evolution Shirt Under Armour ColdGear Evolution Leggings

Most people really like the camouflage Under Armour thermal underwear. I do too. They’re a little pricey but you won’t ever be able to say you didn’t get your money’s worth with these undergarments. I’m not the only person who says these items are worth every penny. They fit comfortably, are easy to layer under your other camo hunting clothes, and are high-quality, high-comfort garments. They will definitely keep you warm. Good base layers can make the cold weather so much more bearable and increase your chances of being in the field long enough to get a shot at the deer, or other game, you’re after.

With that in mind, don’t wear these if the temperature is going to be warm or you’ll get too hot in them, but if you expect cool temperatures and don’t want to have to layer on too many outer layers to keep comfortable, then buy a camo Under Armour ColdGear Evolution shirt and Under Armour ColdGear Evolution pants for a complete set of camouflage thermals for the cold weather during the fall and winter hunting seasons.

They’re meant to fit snug so expect that if you buy your normal size. If you buy them too large, you aren’t going to get the same kind of warmth, but you have to decide that based on your comfort level with how you handle snug fitting underclothes.

Both the shirt and underpants are available in the Mossy Oak Break-Up Infinity or RealTree AP camo patterns.

Bass Pro Shops online has the best price and size selection for the pants and shirts: small to 3XL

Is Carbon the Way to Go Scent Free?

L.H. Harvey

Lots of hunters swear by activated carbon hunting clothes as a way to hunt scent free, but the sad fact is that once the carbon has absorbed its limit of human scent, it’s just about useless. It absorbs scent from everywhere, because it has no way of differentiating human odor from any other kind of odor. There’s a reason people use activated carbon and charcoals in refrigerators to collect scent and get rid of bad odors.

A few long walks or warm days and you’ve sweat and stank enough to use up any possible advantage the small amounts of activated carbon in your clothes could give you. So this hunter suggests that buying hunting clothes that use carbon as the primary way to help you stay scent free on the hunt isn’t very practical or a good way to spend your money.

Use some scent killer products instead and a few good attractants.

Where to Buy Used Hunting Clothes

L.H. Harvey

Are you on a budget but need some camo hunting clothes essentials for the season? There are several places where you’re going to have a high success rate finding used hunting clothes to buy.

camo hunting jacket

A Friend

Got any hunting buddies and friends who have gained or lost weight recently? Offer to buy their quality hunting clothes. This is a win/win for both of you because it means they can buy some new clothes and you can get some nice used hunting clothes for much less than what you would pay for new.

Goodwill

My next recommendation is Goodwill. Don’t be afraid of shopping at the local Goodwill stores. There are usually a lot of clothes to go through, but you can ask anyone working in the store if they have any camo and they’ll usually be happy to help you by telling you where you can find it. The thing about Goodwill is that you might have to look through a lot of clothes to find the good stuff, but there is almost always some good stuff to be found.

Thrift Store

Thrift stores is another place where you can sometimes find good deals on used camo hunting clothes. Most cities and towns have at least one good thrift store where you can find clothes that were either donated or sold to the thrift store. You can also sometimes get the owner to call you when they get new stock (and by new I mean new-to-them used hunting clothes). This means you don’t have to stop in every few days hoping to come across something you missed. Since camo hunting clothes are a specialty item, most stores aren’t going to have loads of it year round, but you just never know when a batch is going to show up.

Online

Craigslist is a good resource, along with ebay. I prefer craigslist over ebay though, and suggest if you use ebay you try to find someone local to buy from.

Those are my suggestions for finding used hunting camo.

Buying used hunting clothes is an especially good option if you’re looking for youth hunting camo because youth tend to outgrow their clothes well before the clothes are worn out or too faded from washing to be effective as camouflage.
