Cold Weather Camo Hunting Clothes

L.H. Harvey

It’s definitely time for the cold weather camo hunting clothes. From jackets, under clothes, thermals, and coveralls, to boots, gloves, hats, and face masks, you can find all the cold weather protective wear you need to make hunting as comfortable as possible when the temperature falls.

Cold mornings can slow you down if you don’t wear the right clothes. Although you want to stay warm, you don’t want to be wearing bulky clothes that get in the way of hunting.

Camouflage hunting clothes for cold weather include all the regular camo brands and come in all the regular camo patterns. You can get snow patterns too for areas of the country that have a lot of snow during the hunting seasons. The thing to watch for when you’re looking for camo good to wear in cold weather is the ability of the clothing to insulate you against both cold and wet weather. Once you get wet on a cold day, you’re done for.

Make sure you wear good base layers. Arctic Shield and Under Armour are popular examples of camo made for cold weather. In cold weather, your boots should be waterproof and insulated, and your socks should be breathable but very good at keeping the cold out.

If you’re looking for a set of cold weather camo hunting clothes basics, here are some suggestions for the getup you’ll want to be wearing on the next crisp, clear, ice-cold morning you go a’ hunting. Don’t leave home without ‘em.

  • Headwear – Beanie or Cap – Under Armour ColdGear Camo Antler Fleece Beanie (in blaze orange or a camouflage pattern) and Under Armour Camo Antler Cap with HeatGear lining are good choices
  • Neckwear
  • Face Mask
  • Gloves
  • Jacket or Coveralls
  • Thermal Underwear
  • Socks
  • Boots

The actual camo hunting clothes themselves just go over and under the clothes listed above.

What Camo Hunting Gloves Should You Wear in Cold Weather?

L.H. Harvey

I don’t think I have to explain why you need a good pair of camo hunting gloves. You need to keep your fingers warm because if you don’t, you might not be able to make the best shot when the time comes and take down the game you’re hunting.

Having to explain that the reason you couldn’t make the shot was because your fingers were numb is as embarrassing as having to admit you didn’t have your scent under control and the deer scented you out before you could get off your shot.

What Hunting Gloves to Wear in Cold Weather

Camo Liner Gloves

Start with a liner glove when there is cold weather. Wear it under your regular hunting gloves and you’ll keep your fingers and hands much warmer. Liner gloves are usually thin, so you can maintain your dexterity. This is good because if you need to do something that requires fine motor skills and you have to take off your outer gloves, your skin is still protected from the cold and you don’t lose all the heat it takes so long to build up sometimes when it’s really, really cold outside.

Outer Hunting Gloves

Next, get a good pair of cold weather hunting gloves to wear over your liner gloves. The thing about liner gloves is that they’re usually thin and tight, so that they interfere with your grip and movements as little as possible. Other hunting gloves, on the other hand, are meant to keep you warm, especially while you’re sitting, maybe in a blind or a tree stand, and maintaining a silent stalker position so you don’t spook off the game you’re hunting, like that trophy deer you don’t want to miss this year!

With that in mind, the hunting gloves are going to be thick and bulky and often impede your ability to do anything that requires precise finger movements, like mess with clips, buckles, or safety harnesses.

Wearing liner gloves under those bulky hunting gloves is a great way to keep warm and still have the ability to do anything you need to do without having to take off all your glove layers entirely. Liner gloves come in camouflage colors so you really are at an advantage. You can also were your camo liner gloves when you hunt during warm weather without an outer glove. This makes camo liner glove a great accessory to have in your hunting gear arsenal.

What Kind of Liner Glove to Wear

Click here to see a recommended hunting camo liner glove. The price is right and the brand is recognized as one of the best. Under Armour makes really great gloves for hunters and sportsmen, with a focus on keeping things light and thin while providing warmth and protection for hunters and sportsmen.

What Kind of Cold Weather Hunting Glove to Wear

Your hunting glove can be of several varieties. It really just depends on what kind of glove you like best. Some people prefer the mitt type gloves because you can fold back the portion that covers the fingers and use your fingers for a variety of precision tasks. Other hunters prefer a standard five-fingered glove. Decide if you need waterproof or wind-resistant gloves for where you’ll be hunting, and choose accordingly. Finally, the one option you do need in the cold weather is insulated hunting gloves. The insulation provides all the warmth and protection you need to keep your fingers nice and toasty.

Here are some excellent suggestions for you to consider for your next pair of camo hunting gloves. Or do what I do and buy several pairs so you have something for any weather condition you could meet up with.

Almost all hunting gloves come in at least one camouflage pattern, the most popular camo choices being Mossy Oak Break-Up and RealTree AP. Some hunters’ camouflage gloves are available in even more camo patterns, including blaze orange.

Where to Buy Used Hunting Clothes

L.H. Harvey

Are you on a budget but need some camo hunting clothes essentials for the season? There are several places where you’re going to have a high success rate finding used hunting clothes to buy.

camo hunting jacket

A Friend

Got any hunting buddies and friends who have gained or lost weight recently? Offer to buy their quality hunting clothes. This is a win/win for both of you because it means they can buy some new clothes and you can get some nice used hunting clothes for much less than what you would pay for new.

Goodwill

My next recommendation is Goodwill. Don’t be afraid of shopping at the local Goodwill stores. There are usually a lot of clothes to go through, but you can ask anyone working in the store if they have any camo and they’ll usually be happy to help you by telling you where you can find it. The thing about Goodwill is that you might have to look through a lot of clothes to find the good stuff, but there is almost always some good stuff to be found.

Thrift Store

Thrift stores is another place where you can sometimes find good deals on used camo hunting clothes. Most cities and towns have at least one good thrift store where you can find clothes that were either donated or sold to the thrift store. You can also sometimes get the owner to call you when they get new stock (and by new I mean new-to-them used hunting clothes). This means you don’t have to stop in every few days hoping to come across something you missed. Since camo hunting clothes are a specialty item, most stores aren’t going to have loads of it year round, but you just never know when a batch is going to show up.

Online

Craigslist is a good resource, along with ebay. I prefer craigslist over ebay though, and suggest if you use ebay you try to find someone local to buy from.

Those are my suggestions for finding used hunting camo.

Buying used hunting clothes is an especially good option if you’re looking for youth hunting camo because youth tend to outgrow their clothes well before the clothes are worn out or too faded from washing to be effective as camouflage.

Time & Motion I-BEAM Turkey Vest

L.H. Harvey

Ol’Tom is a turkey hunting vest staple and the Time & Motion I-Beam Turkey Vest is going to be no different. The Time & Motion Turkey Vests are a good value for the features and quality.

The Time & Motion I-Beam Turkey Vest price is pretty good considering its special design and features.

The I-Beam is different from other turkey vests because of the special padding it has in the back. That added padding is a great solution to the problem of tree bark digging into your spine while you’re hunting. The I-Beam Turkey Vest has protection for your shoulders, spine, and lower back (which incidentally form the shape of an I-beam).

The new design keeps all the other great features of Ol’Tom vests, so you end up with a complete package to help you stay afield longer, promising better turkey hunts all season.

The coolest thing about this one is how accessible everything is. You can find all your turkey hunting essentials with very little movement because of all the pockets.

Buying the I-Beam will get you all the pocket features you’re accustomed to with Ol’Tom turkey vests, with the easy access you need when you’re going for that special call.

The vest comes in any of the following camo patterns:

  • Mossy Oak Obsession
  • Mossy Oak Bottomland
  • Realtree APG HD

If you buy the I-Beam Turkey Vest, note that the vest is sized as "one size fits most" with adjustable side straps and chest strap so it can be adjusted to fit a broad range of hunters.

The I-Beam from Ol’ Tom has many great features, including lots of pockets, easily accessed from the outside. These pockets hold a variety of turkey calls, from diaphragm calls to slate calls, loops for your shells and d-rings for other hunting accessories. There’s also the padded seat cushion, blood-proof game bag, and blaze orange safety flag.

Price: Ol’Tom is selling the vest for $140.00 and the I-Beam Turkey Vest best price is currently at Bass Pro Shops for $139.99.

Things to Keep in Mind When Shopping for a Turkey Vest

Your camo hunting clothes need to match the season, not just so your camouflage blends, but also for comfort.

A good seat for your turkey vest is important because you can spend a lot of time sitting on the ground or propped up against a tree while you’re hunting. A padded seat gives you a bit of comfort and keeps the seat of your pants dry.

In hotter weather, you also want to be sure you have a light-weight, breathable turkey vest so you don’t get too hot wearing it—especially when it’s packed with your hunting necessities.

Go to Bass Pro Shops to get a good deal on any of these turkey hunting vests.

Camo Hunting Clothes – Types and Brands that Work Best

L.H. Harvey

First off, camo hunting clothes and camo military clothes are not the same things! Not even close.

Since I’m going to be talking about the different kinds of camouflage hunting clothes you can have, if you already know your stuff and you’re just looking to get some camo, then click here to visit the BassPro site and skip my article.

Camo hunting clothes are intended to keep the wearer invisible to the eyes of the particular game animals they’re tracking and hunting. Most military camo is intended to keep the wearer invisible to other people and technology. In this article, I’m going to be talking about the types and brands of camo you should look for when you’re hunting game animals.

During rifle season, most hunters need to be wearing some kind of blaze-orange hunting clothes (safety colors) in addition to their camo hunting clothes so that they don’t get shot accidently by another hunter. These kinds of accidents happen more often than they should, but the majority of hunters are safety-conscious when it comes to their hunting rifles. Still, accidents DO happen, and you should always have some blaze camo on you so you don’t become a hunting accident statistic!

So, what are the types of camo clothes available to hunters?

Ghillie suit

It’s a common saying that straight edges and sharp lines are rare in nature!  Ghillie suits break up these patterns and lines with textured pieces so your body’s pattern isn’t as obvious. Many ghillie suits are made with webbing and outdoors materials such as small branches, leaves, grass, and twigs. Can’t get much for “natural” than that. The thing is, you have to remember that these twigs and stuff can get stuck and tear off when you’re squeezing through tight spots in the woods, or trying to crawl into brushy areas.
Leafy suit (also called 3D Camo)
These are for concealment in a wooded environment. Since they’re made with fabric most of the time, you’re not going to have the same problems as with the ghillie suit.
Blaze camo
Blaze camo hunting clothes are worn for safety. Since deer and many other large game animals are thought to be dichromats, experts believe these animals see blaze orange as a dull color. The camo breaks up the wearer’s profile but keeps the wearer highly visible to other humans. Wear your blaze camo, especially during rifle seasons! It’s so important to be safe when you hunt.
Snow camo
Snow camo is specially designed and colored to make hiding in the bright white environment of snow and snow covered areas. It’s white and gray, with some fall and winter browns and grays in the patterns to make concealment as effective as possible.
Grass and leaf camo
This is what most people call camo. It’s the regular old greens and browns, with or without patterns, to blend with wooded and grassy areas. Depending on the environment, the camo fabric will have more of one pattern than another to keep you concealed from the game your hunting.

So there you go, a list of the different kinds of camo. There are many variations of these kinds of camo clothes, but these make up the vast majority of options. There are also many brands out there. Personally, I like Woolrich (very high quality, and a lot of their stuff is wool), Predator, Skyline, Advantage, Realtree (made by Advantage), Mossy Oak (also a pattern), and Predator camo. These brands will serve you well.

Just be sure to pick high quality so it’ll last you darn near forever! That’s why I like BassPro. I can get good quality camo hunting clothes brands there without a lot of hassle. Click here if you want to visit the BassPro site. Patterns that are woven into the fabric make for a much more durable camo that can withstand many washings. Metal snaps on jackets and pants will last longer but might make too much noise when you’re hunting, so sturdy buttons or zippers are a better choice.

Brands of Camo Hunting Clothes

  • Advantage Camo
  • Realtree
  • Mossy Oak
  • TreBark
  • Skyline Camo
  • Next Camo
  • Predator Camo
  • Backland Camo
  • Vertigo Camouflage
  • Columbia
  • Browning
  • Redhead
  • Woolrich: The Original Outdoor Clothing Company

I usually like to pick up my camo from Bass Pro Shops, and you can get most of these brands at their website. The reason I like them is because returns are easy and their customer service is good.

That said, you can’t get some of those brands there, including a few of the better brands, but you can get them at other online hunting stores.

If you think I’ve skipped something in the above list, let me know. I know my stuff, but I’m always ready to learn something new about hunting & camo!

Click here if you want to visit the BassPro site and look for any of these products.

Camo Patterns – Samples of Popular Brands

L.H. Harvey

Each brand of camo hunting clothes has its own proprietary camo patterns. I’ve listed as many of them below as I could find, and I even have a page where I’ve collected images of many of these patterns so you can see what they look like. Click here for the photo gallery.

Finally, I made a video slide show of some of these camo patterns because I really liked them. It’s my first video so don’t be too hard on me. Scroll on down to watch it.

  • Mossy Oak Break-Up
  • Mossy Oak Brush
  • Advantage Max-1 Open Terrain (Advantage Camo)
  • Leaf Pattern
  • Grass Pattern
  • Realtree AP
  • RealLeaf
  • CamWoolflage (Woolrich)
  • Snow Camo
  • Fall Flight (Skyline Camo)
  • Apparition XT (Skyline Camo)
  • Apparition 2.0 (Skyline Camo)
  • Horizon (Skyline Camo)
  • Phantom (Skyline Camo)
  • Excel (Skyline Camo)
  • Excel XT (Skyline Camo)
  • Xtreme (Skyline Camo)
  • Excel Green XT (Skyline Camo)
  • Blaze Horizon (Skyline Camo)

It’s fascinating to notice how detailed and lifelike some of these patterns are. (Click here for the photo gallery.) It’s better if you try wearing different camo patterns and really look at how well they blend in. Take a buddy with you and see what he thinks about how well the clothing works in those areas where you hunt.

If you notice, many of the patterns have both striking and subtle differences that make them better for certain places than others. Notice where your favorite camo blends in the best and then use it whenever you hunt in those areas.  That’s what I do and it works great for me. Just like I have certain camo hunting clothes for the different seasons and weather conditions, I have certain camo for the different areas I hunt.
