Discover the kinds of camo hunting clothes you should be wearing when you hunt and the brands that work best.

First off, camo hunting clothes and camo military clothes are not the same things! Not even close.

Since I’m going to be talking about the different kinds of camouflage hunting clothes you can have, if you already know your stuff and you’re just looking to get some camo, then click here to visit the BassPro site and skip my article.

Camo hunting clothes are intended to keep the wearer invisible to the eyes of the particular game animals they’re tracking and hunting. Most military camo is intended to keep the wearer invisible to other people and technology. In this article, I’m going to be talking about the types and brands of camo you should look for when you’re hunting game animals.

During rifle season, most hunters need to be wearing some kind of blaze-orange hunting clothes (safety colors) in addition to their camo hunting clothes so that they don’t get shot accidently by another hunter. These kinds of accidents happen more often than they should, but the majority of hunters are safety-conscious when it comes to their hunting rifles. Still, accidents DO happen, and you should always have some blaze camo on you so you don’t become a hunting accident statistic!

So, what are the types of camo clothes available to hunters?

Ghillie suit

It’s a common saying that straight edges and sharp lines are rare in nature! Ghillie suits break up these patterns and lines with textured pieces so your body’s pattern isn’t as obvious. Many ghillie suits are made with webbing and outdoors materials such as small branches, leaves, grass, and twigs. Can’t get much for “natural” than that. The thing is, you have to remember that these twigs and stuff can get stuck and tear off when you’re squeezing through tight spots in the woods, or trying to crawl into brushy areas.

Leafy suit (also called 3D Camo)

These are for concealment in a wooded environment. Since they’re made with fabric most of the time, you’re not going to have the same problems as with the ghillie suit.

Blaze camo

Blaze camo hunting clothes are worn for safety. Since deer and many other large game animals are thought to be dichromats, experts believe these animals see blaze orange as a dull color. The camo breaks up the wearer’s profile but keeps the wearer highly visible to other humans. Wear your blaze camo, especially during rifle seasons! It’s so important to be safe when you hunt.

Snow camo

Snow camo is specially designed and colored to make hiding in the bright white environment of snow and snow covered areas. It’s white and gray, with some fall and winter browns and grays in the patterns to make concealment as effective as possible.

Grass and leaf camo

This is what most people call camo. It’s the regular old greens and browns, with or without patterns, to blend with wooded and grassy areas. Depending on the environment, the camo fabric will have more of one pattern than another to keep you concealed from the game your hunting.

So there you go, a list of the different kinds of camo. There are many variations of these kinds of camo clothes, but these make up the vast majority of options. There are also many brands out there. Personally, I like Woolrich (very high quality, and a lot of their stuff is wool), Predator, Skyline, Advantage, Realtree (made by Advantage), Mossy Oak (also a pattern), and Predator camo. These brands will serve you well.

Just be sure to pick high quality so it’ll last you darn near forever! That’s why I like BassPro. I can get good quality camo hunting clothes brands there without a lot of hassle. Click here if you want to visit the BassPro site. Patterns that are woven into the fabric make for a much more durable camo that can withstand many washings. Metal snaps on jackets and pants will last longer but might make too much noise when you’re hunting, so sturdy buttons or zippers are a better choice.

Brands of Camo Hunting Clothes

Advantage Camo

Realtree

Mossy Oak

TreBark

Skyline Camo

Next Camo

Predator Camo

Backland Camo

Vertigo Camouflage

Columbia

Browning

Redhead

Woolrich: The Original Outdoor Clothing Company

I usually like to pick up my camo from Bass Pro Shops, and you can get most of these brands at their website. The reason I like them is because returns are easy and their customer service is good.

That said, you can’t get some of those brands there, including a few of the better brands, but you can get them at other online hunting stores.

If you think I’ve skipped something in the above list, let me know. I know my stuff, but I’m always ready to learn something new about hunting & camo!

Keeping your camo hunting clothes scent free is important to your hunts, so take the extra effort to "treat" your camo right.

While it’s just not possible to remove or cover your human scent 100%, you can get damn close by using a variety of scent elimination techniques and products.

But you can still end up with smelly hunting clothes if you don’t store them right. Follow the storage directions in the article about how to care for camo clothing, if you want to be sure your camo is always ready to wear hunting.

This article is about what kinds of scent free products that are available. If you’re just looking for the supplies you need, click here to visit the BassPro site.

There are many brands of scent free products designed specifically to help you keep away odors that are unnatural to the habitat where you’ll be hunting your wild game. Some of these are available online, but many are in sporting goods stores and even Wal-mart. I didn’t bother listing all scent elimination products because I wanted to focus on those that were made to be used on your hunting clothes and camo, not the stuff that’s made for your body.

I know this is a large list, but most of these products work the same. Just find one you like at a hunting supply store like BassPro and USE them. Not using these products is the biggest reason why hunters get spotted (by smell) out in the woods. Your camo can’t stop your scent unless you give it some special care. And don’t forget those damn boots! Spray them with scent killer every time you put ‘em on and your hunting trophy wall will thank you.

By the way, you can get most of these scent elimination products at BassPro or any other store that sells hunting gear. Click here if you want to visit the BassPro site and look for any of these products.

Care for your camo hunting clothes right and they'll help you get close enough to the animals your hunting to insure many successful hunts!

Taking care of your camouflage is important to keeping it “working” like new. Faded patterns are a sign that you’ve worn your camo out and you should replace it. That’s why getting good quality hunting clothes matters. They’ll last longer and they’ll need to be replaced a lot less often.

This article is about taking care of your camo. If you’re just looking for the supplies you need, click here to visit the BassPro site.

Washing camo clothes

Don’t wash your camo hunting clothes in regular household laundry detergent! As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, a lot of big game have eyes that are sensitive to ultraviolet dyes that are used in some regular laundry detergents. This will ruin your camouflage for hunting these kinds of animals (like whitetail deer). Detergents like Primos Silver XP Scent Eliminator Laundry Detergent and others that you can get at stores that sell hunting gear will get rid of odors and do not contain these UV brighteners.

If you have casual camo that you wear when you aren’t hunting and that you throw in the regular wash, then you need to keep it away from your hunting stuff. If you don’t, you’re liable to get the clothes mixed in with your hunting camo and since you don’t have eyes that can see ultraviolet dyes in your clothes like a lot of big game animals do, you’ll never know you’ve screwed up until it’s too late.

Drying camo clothes

You have two options for drying your camo hunting clothes. One involves using the special scent-a-way (or other scent remover) dryer sheets, and the other is to just hang dry your hunting clothes. Outdoors is better. You’ll want to keep them out of the house or you’ll end up with human scent all over them.

Storing camo clothes

The best place to store your camo is in a scent-free bag (garbage bags work well, but you can buy special scent-seal storage bags. Whatever you choose to store your clothes in, you need to be sure that you put in some activated charcoal or other scent absorbing material to absorb any lingering human odors. Before you bag your camo, you should also use a scent-killing spray on the fabric. (I have another article about keeping your camo scent free. Click here for some brands to try.) Just make sure they’re really, really dry, or you might end up with mold or mildew on your clothes.

I get most of my hunting clothes supplies at Bass Pro. Their site is easy to use and they usually have everything I need. Click here to visit the place where I get my camo clothes supplies.

There are a lot of camo hunting clothes patterns to choose from and I've put together a selection of them so you can compare and discover what's best for your hunting areas.

Each brand of camo hunting clothes has its own proprietary camo patterns. I’ve listed as many of them below as I could find, and I even have a page where I’ve collected images of many of these patterns so you can see what they look like. Click here for the photo gallery.

Finally, I made a video slide show of some of these camo patterns because I really liked them. It’s my first video so don’t be too hard on me. Scroll on down to watch it.

Mossy Oak Break-Up

Mossy Oak Brush

Advantage Max-1 Open Terrain (Advantage Camo)

Leaf Pattern

Grass Pattern

Realtree AP

RealLeaf

CamWoolflage (Woolrich)

Snow Camo

Fall Flight (Skyline Camo)

Apparition XT (Skyline Camo)

Apparition 2.0 (Skyline Camo)

Horizon (Skyline Camo)

Phantom (Skyline Camo)

Excel (Skyline Camo)

Excel XT (Skyline Camo)

Xtreme (Skyline Camo)

Excel Green XT (Skyline Camo)

Blaze Horizon (Skyline Camo)

It’s fascinating to notice how detailed and lifelike some of these patterns are. (Click here for the photo gallery.) It’s better if you try wearing different camo patterns and really look at how well they blend in. Take a buddy with you and see what he thinks about how well the clothing works in those areas where you hunt.

If you notice, many of the patterns have both striking and subtle differences that make them better for certain places than others. Notice where your favorite camo blends in the best and then use it whenever you hunt in those areas. That’s what I do and it works great for me. Just like I have certain camo hunting clothes for the different seasons and weather conditions, I have certain camo for the different areas I hunt.

Recommendations for places to shop for good quality camouflage hunting clothes.

The best places online for picking up good pieces of camo are the stores in this list.

Bass Pro Shops – www.basspro.com

Cabela’s – www.cabelas.com

Dunham’s – www.dunhamssports.com

Gander Mtn – www.gandermountain.com

Bob Wards – www.bobwards.com

You can even pick up some decent pieces at Wal-Mart occasionally, but it’s not my favorite. They’re good about keeping a few pieces of camouflage clothing like jackets, coats, gloves, and coveralls in stock though, so if you need something in a hurry, they’re good in a pinch.

As for brick and mortar stores, I like going to Big Daddy’s, Bass Pro, and Sportsman’s Warehouse when I need to see stuff before I buy it, but most of these places have good return policies, so I don’t worry about it much.

Used Camo Hunting Clothes

Yes, you can get great deals on used camo clothes. I swear I’m not off my rocker on this. Good quality camo makes sense and a good place to get it if you’re a little short on cash is to pick it up used, especially if you’re buying the camo for fast growing juvenile hunters.

Buying used clothes is the best way to get your camo cheap. Especially with children, used camo is a great option. They grow out of their hunting clothes so fast that it can get very expensive to keep them properly dressed for hunting. Look for deals at yard sales, garage sales, estate sales, auctions, consignment shops, children’s used clothing stores, thrift stores, and even on ebay.

I tend to get most of my hunting clothes at Bass Pro because they have good customer service and I like how easy they make it to return stuff if it doesn’t work. They also sell many of the brands I use, even if they don’t have all of them.

Why camo hunting clothes have been around for thousands of years and are must have apparel for serious hunters.

When I hunt, I don’t do it without camo hunting clothes. Some people hunt in whatever they have in their closet and that’s probably fine for them. But if you watch any of the pros, you don’t see guys out in the woods in their jeans and t-shirts. You see hunters dressed to hide. Camouflage clothes of some kind have been used by hunters for thousands of years. The only difference today is that technology has allowed camo creators to make camo so real you can barely even tell there’s a hunter in the woods.

We’ve all seen the videos. Camo works. And serious hunters know it. We use our camouflage hunting clothes, whether it’s grass, timber, realtree, mossy oak, or even blaze, and we take down animals we would never have been able to get close enough to kill without them.

So you might be wondering what a site about camo hunting clothes is going to be about—what I’ll be able to say about the camo clothes, I mean, because I’m sure you know I’m going to be talking about camo clothes and how they relate to hunting—and why I even bothered to put up this site.

Frankly, it’s because I like camo a lot, and there’s a lot to say about it. Your camo is only as good as your care of it. If you don’t treat your camouflage clothing right then it’s not going to do you much good when you get it out in the woods (or wherever it is you’re hunting).

Camouflage hunting clothes are meant to keep you invisible from the game animals you’re tracking. You can’t stay invisible if your camo clothes are loaded with ultraviolet dyes from regular detergents, nor can you stay invisible or properly camouflaged if your camo is covered with human scents.

So, those are what I’ll be going on about on this site. Camo is versatile, durable, and cool to wear. Put on a camo t-shirt, some camo pants, and a good-fittin’ camo hat, and let’s go get some supper. Hell, go ahead and throw on those camo boots while you’re at it. Your momma wouldn’t want you to get to the table half-dressed. (Might want to take that cap off before you say Grace though.)
